Bonds ties Babe...Barry Bonds finally hit his 714th major league home run. This is a milestone: only the third person to ever have achieved this feat. And I'm sure that Bonds will surpass Babe Ruth's record in short order. It's conceivable, but not at all likely, that he will catch Hank Aaron's record too. Hey, even if he retired from baseball today, it would be a major accomplishment.
BUT... what about the steroid allegations? Is it fair to compare Bonds to Ruth and Aaron? Those guys didn't have performance enhancing substances. Should they have two sets of records? Should they kick all the steroid abusers out of professional sports?
I don't know and, as far as professional baseball is concerned, I really don't care because I'm not a fan. But I know this: if Bonds and others took steroids, an awful lot of people in baseball knew about it and looked the other way. They gave their tacit approval for what was going on. I'm talking about teammates, managers, front office types, even owners. Now, because of the media scrutiny and all the record breaking, it has become an issue. It seems that those folks who have known about the steroid abuse in baseball all along now have very short memories.
So who are the bad guys in all this?
Peace and carrots.
