Trains...

Our weekend trip also took us through Cowan, Tennessee as always. Unfortunately, we got stuck on the southwest side of the train track as an incredibly long freight train slowed to a crawl through the 'city'.

Usually, waiting at a railroad crossing is one of those things that just irritates me to no end. Maybe it was the lack of anything like a schedule or timetable - maybe it was the extreme comfort of das ubervehicle - but I didn't mind sitting for a while to watch the train.

As we waited, I looked over to see the train disappearing toward the plateau and, for the first time in my life, I thought about the fact that the modern train travels within yards of the Cowan Railroad Museum and the antique locomotive they have on display. I like the juxtaposition of the old and new technologies... You can just make out the old train on the right below:

Here's a better picture of the antique I took on the way back (from the other side of track):

And a pic of a passing train car with an interesting shadow made by the overhead signal:

There's also some really neat graffiti on some of these cars. I don't like graffiti in most instances but some of it is really quite beautiful:

No reason for this post - just thinking about trains...

The shadow on the next to last picture creates a great visual effect.
